Should you consider an engagement session?
Woohoo! He proposed. You said big “YES”. Champagne was popped open. You are officially engaged! I’m so excited for you!
Maybe you had a long time relationship with your high school sweet heart. Now finally it’s time to tie the knot. Maybe you met love of your life in college. Both of you graduated and got your dream job. And it’s time to take your relationship to the next level, marriage. Maybe he did a surprising proposal on your vacation. maybe he proposed with your best friend, or family’s help. I could come up with so many scenarios. But they will all come down to one basic starting point after your engagement, planning, right?
You booked your venue. Now it’s time to find the right wedding photographer. Then you have more questions in your head once you start thinking about photography. One of the most common questions I get from couples is “Do I need an engagement session?”
Ultimately, it’s all up to you. I offer it as add on option. So you will never feel you are force to have an engagement session. It is your choice.
However, I do recommend to have an engagement session, not because I will book extra session and make extra money. It is because the following reasons you might find valuable from an engagement session. I totally understand the couples couldn’t get their engagement session done with me even though I’m their wedding photographer. Because they live in other state but getting married here in New England. However, I still do recommend to find a great photographer and get it done where is convenient to you. So you will have amazing save the date photos.
First of all, engagement session is like a test drive. It will allow you to learn how your wedding photographer will work in action on your wedding day beforehand. You will know what your photographer is going to ask you to do during your portrait time. What’s the process to get through poses etc.
As your photographer, we will have better idea how comfortable you are in front of the camera. This is perfecting time for you and your photographer to get to know each other better beyond just email and phone communications.
Second, which is the result from the first. I totally understand that most of people never experienced a professional photoshoot before. Engagement session is especially important for those couples who don’t know what to do in front of camera. It serves as a practice run as well. It will help you to get rid of nerves and be confident, knowing what to expect on your wedding day.
Last but not least, You might think, Hum, I have photos from proposal. But are they perfect as your Save the Date photos? First impression is everything. I’m sure you don’t want to go short on the most important event of your life, right? So your beautiful professional engagement photos will come handy here. Your family and friend will be raving about great amazing you looked in those photos. They will be so excited and can’t wait to attend your wedding. Not a bad start at all.
